A weekend full of awesomeness

I finished doing some writing and reading this weekend, so I was able to spend some Sar-time doing things I like to do. I was at Hobby Lobby just looking around (okay, so I'm weak and always leave that store buying at least something) and remembered a project I had seen on Pinterest. $3.59 later, I bought four styrofoam letters and a cheap skein of yarn, which resulted with the following:

LOVE for my bathroom!

Tiny, but adorable. The "V" looks a little fat here, so I fixed it but the pictures are from before I rewrapped it.

Today, I headed to church and found out that my awesome Secret Pal got me the following:

An ice cream-themed August gift (genius, since it has been so hot here) with a scoop, fudge and caramel, and praline almond topping.

Then, there was a gift for me from July (I thought I had already gotten one, so it was a delightful surprise!) that contained Oregon Chai Tea. If you haven't had Oregon Chai, I am so sorry for you--it's amazing. I can never find any in Texas, so I cannot wait until January when we reveal our Secret Pals and I can find out where she found this gem!

Sarah and I got to spend some time at the pool this afternoon, and I'm going to get fro-yo with Megan H. soon. Plus, ABC Family played Beauty and the Beast on TV last night. Could this weekend get any better?!

How was your weekend?

Fill in the blank Friday v.7

[1] My favorite color is... Blue. Or green. Or rainbow. It changes.

[2] My travel destination of choice is... Since I've been living in Texas, it's usually up to the northwest to visit home. However if I could travel anywhere in the world, I'd choose Greece. Or maybe Ireland to visit Clare.

[3] My favorite food is... my mom's homemade mac and cheese, corn dogs, or Diet Coke. Or all three at the same time. Also, I have this odd obsession with tomatoes.

[4] My happy place is... curled up with Chloe on my papsan chair in my bedroom.

[5] My favorite saying is... Charles Swindoll's quote:
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company; a church; a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past; we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes."

[6] My dirty little secret is... I bite my fingernails. Not grossly, and I don't bite any of the skin, I just hate long nails and feel like it's more efficient to get rid of them if they start bothering me. :)

[7] Something friends might say about me is... that I'm entirely "too happy" (direct quote from two days ago). I'd prefer that to the alternative. :) I have bad days, I just make them quiet or don't let others know about it. I feel like this has to do with Charles Swindoll's quote; it's my life philosophy.

What's your favorite quote/saying?

Thursday thoughts: iPhoneography version

Yesterday, I went to a Patron tasting. Don't worry, I had a DD.

It was at a fun new-ish Waco restaurant, Sam's on the Square.

We tried four types of Patron

Three with the three courses, and one with dessert.

First course: Mexican chopped salad

Ceviche (so good!)

Brisket tacos

And lastly, a cheesecake chimichanga. My favorite part.

It was a good experience, but cost us a whopping $25 and the portions weren't very large at all. For them to advertise that it is a "four course meal" with Patron pairings was pretty lame, and me being the lightweight I am definitely needed a driver considering there was barely any food in my belly to ease the tequila.

It was fun though!

Today, I made 60 baggies full of beads for the sex/health education class I'm teaching next week. For 7th grade females, we're making bracelets that symbolize their menstrual cycles: 5 red (period), 8 green (formation of the uterine lining), 1 yellow (ovulation), and 14 blue (maintained lining of the uterus). Girls love bracelets (and periods, clearly).

Then I went in to the office for a few hours to book my plane ticket to Boston for SPR in September, along with work on some data sets that Dr.s D and S asked me to look over/clean up. I look productive with two computers, but my Mac just has iTunes playing some Beatles.

Are You Kidding Me?!

Are You [expletive] Kidding Me?
Subtitled: The Time I Cried Because the US IRS Told Me I Owed $9000

I bought my first home in May of 2008, a few months after graduating college but after accepting admission to a second tier graduate school in Waco, TX. We signed the papers such that I became the official owner of my beautiful condominium on June 1st, 2008 (I still cannot believe that I’ve been here for three years!). For a reference point, most graduate student stipends are $15,000-$20,000 a year (rollin' in the dough, clearly). Because the cost of living in Waco is significantly lower than Tacoma, WA, my mother and I worked out a budget where I could pay my mortgage and all my bills on my graduate student stipend.

Isn't it cute?!

When I bought my home, my brother was working as a mortgage broker in WA and knew all the ins and outs of home buying. He suggested I apply for the First-Time Homebuyer’s Credit, which at the time was an interest-free loan for 10% of the cost of your new home (for those who bought homes in 2009, this was actually a gift from the government, but I actually have to pay my amount back yearly on my taxes). I applied and received the money with my tax return.

In September of 2010, I received a letter from the IRS telling me I needed to provide evidence I owned the house, so I sent off a copy of my HUD-1 statement. In March 2011, they responded with a letter telling me I owed $9000: the cost of my 10% loan, interest over the previous two years, and a fine for “defrauding the government.” Apparently I did not qualify for the First-Time Homebuyer’s Credit because my parents, who own their own house in WA, co-signed my loan.

[Insert Sar’s frustration, crying, and plenty of curse words here.]

After a little bit of research from my mom and amazing Aunt Heide (who happened to be visiting when I received this letter), we realized that the IRS did not seem to know their own rules. In fact, straight off the IRS website was a scenario in which a single first-time homebuyer buys a house and her parent cosigns a loan, and the first-time homebuyer can still get the credit (S2). Let’s remember how all of this is a moot point, because I have to pay back the loan anyway!

Luckily, both my mom and Aunt Heide had worked in government jobs for the majority of their lives so they were both used to dealing with government agencies. Aunt Heide drafted a letter in response to the IRS while my mom and I comprised evidentiary support that I was the primary resident of my home. We ended up sending a three-page letter and seven supporting exhibits ranging from my HUD-1 statement; bank and homeowner’s insurance statements; property tax statements; energy bills; bank statements for all of 2008 and February 2011; and my tax returns, all of which my name was the primary resident. I even included IRS Form 5405 from my tax return that initiated repayment of this credit, showing that clearly I understood that this was an interest-free loan that I have to repay. All in all, I sent 27 pages to the IRS telling them that they were mistaken.

The matter was officially resolved in June of 2011 (after multiple letters from the IRS saying “the matter was in the process of being reviewed” and they would respond within 30 days) in which the IRS said the changes to my 2008 income tax return were incorrect and that I officially did not owe the US government $9000.

Damn straight.

Needless to say, I’m terrified to ever do a tax return (and yes, IRS, I’ll do them, but seriously, am I going to be audited again? ‘Cuz that sucked, and I told the truth the whole time), and I owe my mother/Aunt Heide my financial well-being. I’m forever grateful.

Also, if you got the First-Time Homebuyer’s Credit, be prepared to be audited.

Every day waves: DIY!

Anybody who knows me understand that I only curl my hair for special occasions:

Even then, my curls don't last very long. They stay cute for an hour or so, then go flat (with maybe one or two staying curly to spite me, or to make me look as if I just woke up with bedhead). I came across Lauren Conrad's tutorial for "every day waves" and I thought I'd try it.

I love the way my curls stay all day! I used Healthy Sexy Hair's Soy Renewal as my protective serum ('cuz I have it in my cabinet and I wasn't about to go buy any more hair product for a style that may not work), and unlike Lauren, I have the thickest hair possible. Her hairstylist says not to hairspray each curl while curling, because apparently it dries out your hair (makes sense, but not something I had ever thought about). Thus, I chose to use a heat protectant spray on my hair to hold the curl. I like Matrix Thermal Active Setting Spray, 'cuz again, it works, it's cheap, and I have it in my cabinet. I had to curl my hair in layers because I have so much hair, but it seemed to work similarly to the video.

Before I combed out the curls:

I didn't use a comb to soften the curls, I instead used my fingers. I know my hair well enough to know that if I used a comb, I'd never get the curl back without firing up the curling iron again.

I then like to use Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream to set the curls and add a little messy texture.

Here's what it looks like on me after 8 hours. It doesn't look perfect, but it looks wavy enough to look sassy and less starkly straight like I normally wear it. Plus, it doesn't take very long to do, so I can wear these often and not feel as if I have to wake up early to get started on my hair.

Although it doesn't look anything like Lauren's hair (dude, she has a stylist), I'd consider it a success. How do you usually curl your hair? Does it stay? What's your favorite product to get it to stick?

Inspirational Tuesday

I've seen this at least three times in three different settings, and I love it.

No arms, no legs, no worries.

But he does have a chicken leg.

2011 wedding extravaganza v.4

Court and Bo's wedding was a friggin' blast. Proof:

Baby's breath all around. Cheap, adorable, and amazing.

Wedding programs (you can baaaarely make out my name halfway down the first column on the program on the left).

Before the wedding! Aren't they gorgeous?!

Praying

Mr. and Mrs. Bo Carlton!

First dance to Brad Paisley's "She's Everything"

My evening was quite pleasant. ;)

The beautiful Maid of Honor, Kelli (Court's younger sister) and the only person who would dance with me, Campbell. We had a blast dancing the afternoon away!

If you want to see a real photographer's view of the amazing day, go check out Jess Barfield Photography's blog here. The second shooter made a sweet video of their exit from the reception that you should also check out. I love love!

(For those who have been counting, that's the fourth wedding I've attended and fifth wedding I've been involved with this summer. Karenna's will be in December, but that's all I anticipate this year!)

Court's wedding: an iPhone preview

Court & Bo's rehearsal dinner was on Friday, with a gorgeous wedding/reception yesterday. I haven't uploaded my DSLR photos to my computer yet, but I figured I'd give you an iPhone preview:

For the rehearsal dinner, I followed this tutorial to get my hair into "everyday waves." For someone that has an extremely hard time getting her hair to stay curly, I was very pleased (although mine look nothing like hers).

The rehearsal (in which the pastor was very clear about no sloppy kisses, lots of smiling, and if he drops a ring, don't freak out...anybody comforted by that last bit?!).

Saturday morning, Courtney invited us to breakfast to start off the big day. I had an amazing white mocha (hello!) and Court gave us thoughtful gifts to say thanks for helping her out for the wedding. Adorable.

Some photos pre-wedding! Here's the Johnson family with the soon-to-be Carltons.

Wedding time! Court's saying her vows in this photo.

During the reception, Campbell (aka flower girl #3) was my date. We danced to Lady Gaga, learned the Cupid Shuffle, and sung Neil Diamond (This 5 year old knows the entire song "Sweet Caroline"! Good parenting if you ask me!).

As you left, her photographer Jess had her business cards printed with Court's bridal portraits on the front. Genius idea.

And that was the wedding, iPhone style! Stay tuned for better pics of the magical day.

Fill in the blank Friday v.6

Fillin' in the blanks with Lauren this afternoon! Join us!

1. One of my happiest moments ever was... I cannot think of any particular happy moments that weren't accompanied with a thousand other happy moments. I'm just a happy gal!

2. Summer is wedding season and weddings are... fun, amazing, so exciting! I love weddings, but I especially love watching a couple start out their marriage. Sharing love in group settings is a wonderful thing.

3. This summer... I'm sad because people keep moving away! I just found out the other guy in my lab, Nathaniel, got a job offer in New Mexico. It's super exciting because it's his dream post-doc position, but it sucks for me because he's basically taught me everything I know in the lab--and he's leaving. It's been a summer full of change.

4. My summer food of choice has been... popsicles. All over the place.

via Natalie Dee

5. My summer uniform has been... Shorts and blouse, or capris and a blouse if I have to teach/give an assessment. And always a light sweater due to air conditioning!

6. If I could spend the entire summer in one location I would choose... Seattle. I don't care about everybody complaining about the lack of sun (or as my Aunt Heide showed me, 78 minutes of summer). Trade you any day. Also, a 75 degree WA day is perfect!

7. My summer anthem is... all Beach Boys songs, with the top down in dad's convertible, singing at the top of our lungs. Glorious.

How's your Friday? (And Lisa, if you're reading this in Norway, how's your Saturday?! I hope everybody you know and love is okay.)

Thursday thoughts

Some thoughts today:

{one} I'm done housesitting, and although I love those dogs, I'm so glad that I don't have to limit my plans to make sure I'm available to feed them.

{two} It's been entirely too hot here lately. Today is day 22 in Waco of 100+ degree temperature, and day 39 in the year. Gross.

{three} After our meeting today, Addy and I went to talk to the guy in charge of the Bear habitat (BU has bears on campus) and then stopped at Baylor's new fountain. Beautiful.

{four} I helped a friend with his statistical analyses today, and although I couldn't do one thing he asked, I felt pretty ballin' being able to help him out. Teaching introductory statistics versus performing advanced statistics on real data are totally different!

{five} Court and Bo's wedding is Saturday, with their rehearsal dinner tomorrow evening. I'm super excited because it's another western-themed rehearsal dinner, but I didn't want to do a repeat with what I wore to Andy and Christina's rehearsal dinner. I think I'm going with this little blue number, with eyelets and embroidery that you can't tell from an iPhone pic:

(I'm pretty sure I moved my head when I took this photo, because my head looks awkwardly oblong.)

(And with a sweater, for when inside becomes entirely too air conditioned.)

How's your Thursday?

The past week (or so) in iPhone pics

The past week(ish) in iPhoneography:

Heart-shaped wound after helping Jordan and Rae move to Maine. How fitting.

Nick and I went paddleboarding. He fell in twice (lost his balance) and tried to run me over four times. I didn't fall off at all, so I'm pretty proud of that. ;)

Sportin' my new, totally hip (and sorority-esque) neon fake Ray-Bans I got from the Baylor marina. Win.

Lots of pita appetizers. So good.

Woke up Wednesday morning and headed over to the house I'm dog-sitting at, and found a happy surprise. This is in addition to the dog poop that I continue to find and have to clean up (Mona, one of the two golden retrievers, is very neurotic). Austin (19-year-old son of dog owners who has been staying at the house on and off throughout my time there) mentioned he thought it was in retaliation from the time he and his friends TP'ed the same house four times in five weeks. I told him to clean it up and that he deserved it. (He cleaned up the big pieces, but when I went over to walk/feed the dogs that evening, I still cleaned up an entire trashbag full). Teenagers.

Went to sushi yesterday with Jessica and Amy for lunch,

and decided to continue the conversation at their apartment pool. It was kind of overcasty too, so it was perfect for pool and tan time.

Court's wedding is this weekend (eee!) and I cannot wait. I'm part of the house party (southern tradition) so I'll be involved in a small but sweet way. I'm excited to share Court and Bo's day with them, but needed some black shoes as part of my attire. New shoes? Darn! ;)
(Payless; on sale too!)

I went shopping and got their wedding gift too. More about that post-wedding, but I took Holly's great idea. If you don't remember what she suggested, don't worry, I'll blog the details after Saturday!

How's your week been?
